We attended the opening of Spank the Monkey on Tuesday night at the Baltic in Newcastle.

Thanks again to Simon and Gordon at Obey Clothing UK for the invite. A good time was had by all!

In addition to the gallery pieces the artists are taking to the streets of Newcastle and Gateshead which has already produced some amazing results. If you are in the Newcastle area get yourself a copy of the map and check it out for yourself. The first image is of Shepard Fairey’s artwork in Jesmond Metro Station, definitely worth a look in!!!

We’ve just got back from a trip to San Diego and LA. After visiting ASR and Agenda tradeshows, Andy Howell and Skip in San Diego we headed to Los Angeles to meet up with Evan Dehaven amongst others. It was cool to see everyone and we even got time to pop in and see Kelly Slater in the boost mobile surf pro.

Thanks to Simon at Obey Clothing UK for hooking us up with an invite to the opening of SPANK THE MONKEY at BALTIC in Gateshead.

The exhibition will be the first serious international examination of urban and suburban art bridging the gap between the street and the traditional art space. With strong links to graphic design, graffiti, manga comics, skateboarding and surfing this group show includes artists based in urban centres across the world. Work will also be seen outside BALTIC with large-scale public interventions in both Gateshead and Newcastle.

Spank the Monkey presents twenty-two artists from urban centres across the world. Including: Chiho Aoshima, Banksy, Dzine, Dr. Lakra, FAILE, Freaks Gallery, Shepard Fairey, Groovisions, Invader, Kozyndan, Barry Mcgee, Ryan Mcginness, Takashi Murakami, Miss Van, Neasden Control Centre, Os Gemeos, David Shrigley, Natasha Struchkova, Swoon, Aya Takano, Ed Templeton,Yasumasa Yonehara.

Designed by Hype Type Studio 304 page hard cover book with x2 DVD’s directed by Ted Newsome (former art/film director of Transworld Skateboarding) including interviews and videos by Andy Howell, Shepard Fairey, Ed Templeton and other artists and skateboarders…

“There hasn’t been a book written in this way about this cultural movement, transcending the average contemporary street art offering, actually following the timeline of the artist’s life and development, told through his own words and those of his contemporaries. A creative and inspirational journey through the origins of DIY, movements in art and action sports, and the birth of a new youth culture. The most influential and famous individuals within the culture collectively share their experiences in this portrait of the neo-contemporary renaissance man.”

DVD’s include interviews with artists and skaters and full length videos from New Deal, Freedom, and Howell’s personal archives!! Music from Alyasha Owerka-Moore, Monkey Wrench, Daniel Mead and friends, Militree, Mass Prophets, Ulypians featuring HBOMB43, and The Blowing Rock Triplets!!
